The Schooner FAME, based in the historic seaport of Salem and built by National Heritage Fellow Harold Burnham, has been honored by Yankee Magazine in their annual "Best of New England" issue as offering the region's "Best Day Sail".
"It's an amazing honor," said Captain Mike Rutstein, who has owned the vessel since she was launched in 2003. "There are so many terrific boats in our region, from downeast Maine to the Cape. For FAME to be singled out as 'Best Day Sail' is huge for us.
"It's a real testament to the superb quality of the boat and to our terrific staff. FAME is crewed by people who love sailing and know their history and want to share that with our guests. We have fun out there, and it shows."
FAME is a full-scale replica of a privateer schooner that sailed from Salem during the War of 1812. She sails up to four times daily (weather permitting) from Memorial Day through September and then weekends only through Halloween from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem.
